The Davey Garden System water pump is available in up to four different configurations, and each configuration may feature a different power capacity, range of attachments, and volumetric flow rate. The most suitable pump size can be selected according to the layout of your backyard and the characteristics of your existing water network, with both smaller and larger variants available within the specified product groups.

These electropumps are manufactured by Davey specifically for clean-water distribution and irrigation applications. Only the product models identified within the relevant product groups are covered, and no other variants are included or reproduced beyond those listed. All Garden System booster pumps are a self-priming, jet-assisted centrifugal pump design. However, between 35-04 and 35-04PC, these two models feature a difference in the operating manner as the SJ35-04 needs to be controlled manually, while the SJ35-04PC provides more ease with automatic pressure control operation.

Method of Identification

For systematic identification and classification, each versions of Davey’s Garden System water pumps are assigned a unique model code. This coding system allows a centrifugal pump to be identified regardless of when it was manufactured or developed, making it easier to determine the appropriate spare parts when the pump requires servicing or an overhaul in the future. This identification is essential because every pump model has its own range of replacement components, and parts designed for one model may not be compatible with another.

In the case of SJ35-04, this Garden System water pump identification code is structured as follows:

  1. The model name begins with the abbreviation “SJ”, which represents the Garden System jet pump configuration.
  2. Two numerical digits follow the letters. These digits indicate the nominal flow rate in litres per minute (LPM) under British Standard piping conditions.
  3. A dash is then added, followed by another two numerical digits. These numbers represent the pump’s overall cut-in pressure in bar, multiplied by 10.
Davey SJ35-04 Garden System Water Pump Method of Identification

Based on the image provided, the product code (SKU) SJ35-04 identifies the pump as one of Davey’s Garden System water pumps. The code indicates a nominal flow rate of 60 Litres per minute (LPM), while the “08” designation represents a cut-in pressure of 8 bar when interpreted according to the specified coding system. The “PC” suffix further confirms that an integrated Pressure Controller is included as part of the pump assembly.

Inlet And Flange Connection

A red plastic cap found secured onto the suction inlet of this centrifugal pump. The lustre emitted indicates the polished surface of this stainless steel housing.

The SJ35-04 centrifugal pump has a 1″ BSP female inlet and output connectors to suit most lawn irrigation systems, hoses, sprinklers and basic water transfer applications. Easy to install and convenient, the standard BSP threaded connections integrate easily with commonly available plumbing fittings and accessories.

The inlet connection is built to efficiently accept water and can self-prime, while the outlet connection ensures a continuous flow and pressure to the irrigation equipment it is linked to. The near closeness of the suction and discharge connections also eases pipeline planning and installation, decreasing set-up time and boosting accessibility for maintenance.

Volute

The Davey SJ35-04 includes a 304 stainless steel pump casing (volute) that provides outstanding corrosion resistance, durability and long-term performance for garden watering and home water transfer applications. The stainless-steel construction protects hydraulic components from wear and corrosion while dealing with different water quality. In addition, reducing friction in the pump improves hydraulic efficiency.

The pump is a single-stage, jet-assisted centrifugal pump and the volute casing is an integral part of the pump. The volute casing is designed to efficiently collect the water discharged from the impeller and convert velocity of flow into pressure. This optimized flow path delivers consistent water pressure and reliable performance for hoses, sprinklers, dripper systems and other irrigation applications.

The hydraulic assembly is fixed to the motor bracket at eight points and sealed with an O-ring against the stainless-steel housing. The seal is better and contributes to the long service life and reliability of the pump.

Venturi Effect

A close-up view of the black coloured Venturi tube that's made in glass-filled thermoplastic. This is a core component of Davey's Garden System pump that helps to increase pressure and velocity, while simultaneously reducing volumetric flow rate.

Venturi Tube: A small component is positioned immediately after the suction inlet of the electric pump. Known as the venturi tube, this narrow plastic passage is installed upstream of the impeller before the incoming water reaches the pumping chamber. Its design is based on the Venturi effect in fluid dynamics, where a reduction in flow-passage area causes the fluid velocity to increase while the local static pressure decreases. The narrower cross-section can therefore influence the pressure and velocity characteristics of the incoming water before it reaches the impeller.

Glass-Filled Plastic Construction: The venturi tube used in Davey’s Garden System water pump is manufactured from glass-filled plastic. This material was selected for the component for two main reasons:

  • Cost-Effective: Since the Garden System water pump is intended primarily for applications such as herb and garden irrigation, the use of thermoplastic for the venturi tube helps keep manufacturing and replacement costs relatively low. This contributes to making the pump a more economical option for domestic users.
  • Water-Resistant Properties: The polymer-based material provides suitable resistance to water exposure and helps maintain a smooth internal surface within the venturi passage. This reduces unnecessary flow resistance and allows water to pass through the component efficiently during operation.
  • Easy Replacement: If the venturi tube becomes damaged or requires replacement, the component can be removed and replaced without replacing the entire pump assembly. Replacement parts can be sourced through Davey Malaysia, while the cost is generally lower than using a comparable component manufactured from stainless steel.

Impeller And Diffuser

The Davey SJ35-04 has a 304 stainless steel impeller and a precision engineered jet and venturi diffuser assembly of glass filled thermoplastic. Together they constitute the hydraulic heart of the pump’s single-stage, jet-assisted centrifugal design, providing efficient water flow, reliable suction performance and consistent pressure delivery for garden watering and irrigation applications.

The stainless-steel impeller provides excellent durability, corrosion resistance and long-lasting hydraulic efficiency in clean water handling. Its sturdy build helps to reduce wear while maintaining constant performance over long durations of use. Stainless steel also decreases the friction in the hydraulic system and increases the efficiency of the pump.

The jet and venturi diffuser assembly works with the impeller to optimize water through the pump by increasing the suction capability and pressure generation. The jet assisted design allows for self-priming operation and the SJ35-04 will provide dependable water flow for garden hoses, sprinklers, drippers and other domestic irrigation applications.

Gasket

As the various components of the booster pump operate, the gasket serves as an important sealing element between the volute and the TEFC motor assembly. A secure seal is required because water passes through the pump at considerable velocity and pressure. The gasket helps prevent leakage from the hydraulic section into the electrical and motor components of the Garden System centrifugal pump, thereby supporting safer and more reliable operation.

Vibration Absorption: The gasket also performs an important vibration-dampening function during pump operation. Vibrations generated by the motor and rotating components can place additional stress on the pump assembly if they are not adequately controlled. By absorbing and reducing some of these mechanical vibrations, the gasket helps keep the connected components securely positioned and minimises the risk of loosening or excessive movement over time.

Backplate And Mechanical Seal

Both the mechanical seal and backplate found as individual components in close-up view. This was achieved after dismantling Davey's Garden System water pump for technical observation.

A high-quality mechanical seal assembly is incorporated in the Davey SJ35-04 to prevent water leakage between the hydraulic end and motor, ensuring reliable and efficient pump operation. The seal is equipped with a ceramic stationary seal ring, a carbon rotating seal ring, EPDM elastomer and a 304 stainless steel seal spring, providing excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance and long-term sealing performance for garden watering and transfer of domestic water applications.

The pump’s hydraulic assembly is mounted to the motor bracket (backplate) at eight locations and sealed to the stainless-steel pump housing with an O-ring configuration. The heavy-duty construction increases the structural integrity and the sealing efficacy and helps the pump last longer by lowering the chances of leakage and keeping the hydraulic and motor parts aligned properly.

The backplate assembly and mechanical seal function together to preserve efficient operation of the pump, prevent water from entering the motor and help sustain the reputation of the SJ35-04 for reliable, low-maintenance operation in residential and irrigation applications.

EPDM O-Ring, Spacer And Washer

The Davey SJ35-04 has EPDM O-rings throughout the hydraulic assembly to ensure positive sealing between pump components and to assist prevent water leaks during operation. EPDM is chosen for its outstanding resistance to water, weathering and ageing and is therefore well suited to garden watering and home water transfer applications. The O-ring seal also makes it more serviceable and more reliable in the long run, maintaining hydraulic integrity over a range of operating conditions.

The connection between hydraulic assembly and motor bracket is an O-ring sealed connection, hence providing a secure interaction between the pump casing and motor components. This design improves the sealing performance, minimizes the chance of leakage, and enables a longer service life.

The datasheet clearly states that EPDM O-rings are used, but does not mention anything about spacer materials or standards. So, the only mention of spacers should be in relation to their usage for proper component alignment and for assembly integrity, as there is no further information published in the datasheet.
